If you never got to Taco Bell and ordered this, it’s a great lunch or dinner stuffed with ground beef, lettuce, and tomatoes. This is my version of a Copycat Version from Taco Bell. It’s easy to make, and the air fryer does excellent cooking.

My copycat version contains seasoned ground beef, nacho cheese, sour cream, and shredded lettuce. Then it’s wrapped up in a flour tortilla and air fried to get the crisp for which the Crunchwrap is named. This recipe’s real star is the crunchiness you get from air frying the tortilla.

What is Air Fryer Crunchwrap?

An Air Fryer Crunchwrap is a creative and healthier twist on the popular fast-food item, combining the convenience of air frying with the deliciousness of a stuffed tortilla wrap. Typically, it consists of a large flour tortilla filled with layers of seasoned ground meat (such as beef or chicken), nacho cheese, sour cream, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and a crunchy tostada shell or tortilla chips for that signature crunch. The tortilla is then folded into a hexagonal or circular shape, ensuring all the fillings are neatly contained inside, and cooked in an air fryer until the exterior is golden and crispy.

This cooking method not only reduces the amount of oil needed compared to traditional frying but also delivers a crispy finish that makes the Crunchwrap incredibly appealing. It’s a versatile recipe for various fillings and adaptations, perfect for a quick meal, snack, or a fun twist on taco night. The air fryer ensures that the Crunchwrap is evenly cooked, with a satisfyingly crispy texture on the outside, while keeping the inside warm and flavorful.

  • Large Flour Tortillas: The base of your Crunchwrap, these need to be large enough to hold all your fillings and still fold neatly. They offer a soft, pliable canvas for your delicious creation.
  • Lean Ground Beef: Seasoned and cooked until perfectly browned, lean ground beef provides a savory, protein-packed layer that’s the heart of the Crunchwrap.
  • Taco Seasoning: This blend of spices gives your ground beef the iconic, bold flavor that’s essential for that authentic Crunchwrap taste.
  • Nacho Cheese Sauce: Adds a creamy, cheesy element that binds the layers together with its rich, tangy flavor, elevating the overall taste.
  • Tostada Shells: The crunch factor in your Crunchwrap, these crispy shells add a satisfying texture contrast to the soft tortilla and tender fillings.

Making a Crunchwrap in an air fryer is a fun and easy way to enjoy a delicious, crispy meal with less oil. Follow these steps to create your own Air Fryer Crunchwrap:

Cook the Ground Beef:

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the beef, breaking it up into crumbles. Once there is no pink left, drain off any excess liquid from the meat and return it to the skillet.

Season with taco seasoning, cumin, garlic powder, and onion powder, stir to combine and make sure the seasonings coat the meat. Add the water, stir to combine, lower the heat to low and let simmer until the sauce is thickened and most of the water has evaporated, take off the heat and set aside.

If your air fryer requires preheating, preheat to 400°F.   Take a 12-inch tortilla and lay it on a clean work surface. Add 1/4th of the meat mixture. Top with 1/4th of the nacho cheese. Add a tostada on top. On top of the tostada add 1/4 of the tomatoes, lettuce, and sour cream. Place a 6-inch tortilla on top.

As tightly as you can, wrap the bottom larger tortilla around the sides, folding it over as you go. Spray the inside of the air fryer with cooking spray. Place the wrap, seam side down into the air fryer. Spray the top with cooking spray. Air fry for 4 minutes, flipping halfway through and spraying with more cooking spray. Repeat with the remaining crunchwraps.

Recipe Variations

Creating a Copycat Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme in your air fryer not only brings the fast-food favorite into your kitchen but also allows for customization and healthier twists. Here are some delicious recipe variations to try:

  • Vegetarian Crunchwrap: Swap out the ground beef for a mixture of black beans and quinoa or a meat substitute like Beyond Meat or Quorn. Season with taco seasoning for that authentic flavor without the meat.
  • Spicy Chicken Crunchwrap: Use ground chicken instead of beef, and amp up the heat with additional spices such as cayenne pepper or diced jalapeños. Add a spicy sauce or salsa for an extra kick.
  • Breakfast Crunchwrap: Fill your Crunchwrap with scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage bits, shredded cheese, and hash browns. Serve with a side of salsa for a breakfast twist on the classic.
  • BBQ Crunchwrap: Mix your cooked ground beef or shredded chicken with BBQ sauce before adding it to your Crunchwrap. Pair with coleslaw and crispy fried onions for a BBQ-themed treat.
  • Vegan Crunchwrap: Use lentils or a vegan ground meat substitute seasoned with taco seasoning. Add vegan cheese, avocado, lettuce, tomato, and a dairy-free sour cream to keep it plant-based.
  • Greek-Inspired Crunchwrap: Substitute the ground beef with seasoned ground lamb or a mix of ground beef and lamb, add tzatziki sauce instead of sour cream, and include feta cheese, diced cucumbers, and tomatoes for a Mediterranean flair.
  • Philly Cheesesteak Crunchwrap: Fill with thinly sliced sautéed steak, onions, and bell peppers. Use provolone cheese instead of a Mexican cheese blend and nacho cheese for a Philly cheesesteak-inspired version.
  • Buffalo Chicken Crunchwrap: Combine shredded chicken with Buffalo sauce, add crumbled blue cheese or ranch dressing instead of sour cream, and include celery for a crunchy, spicy variant.
  • Hawaiian Crunchwrap: Add diced ham and pineapple over your choice of protein for a sweet and savory combination. Pair with a teriyaki sauce drizzle for a tropical twist.
  • Gluten-Free Crunchwrap: Ensure all ingredients, including the tortillas and tostada shells, are gluten-free. Various gluten-free tortillas made from corn, almond, or cassava flour are available and suitable for this purpose.

Each of these variations allows you to enjoy the classic Crunchwrap Supreme with a unique twist, making it easy to cater to various dietary preferences and flavor cravings. Experiment with different fillings and sauces to create your perfect custom Crunchwrap in the air fryer.

Pro Tips

Creating the ultimate Air Fryer Crunchwrap can be a breeze with these pro tips, ensuring every bite is as delicious as it is satisfying:

  • Use Extra Large Tortillas: Select the largest tortillas you can find to ensure there’s enough room to fold over the filling without tearing. Large tortillas make wrapping easier and prevent the filling from spilling out during cooking.
  • Warm Tortillas Before Folding: Briefly warm the tortillas to make them more pliable and easier to fold without breaking. This step reduces the risk of cracks and leaks, ensuring a neat and intact Crunchwrap.
  • Layer Wisely: Start with heavier, less moist ingredients at the bottom and work up to lighter, wetter toppings.
  • Seal with a Smaller Tortilla: If the filling extends beyond the fold of the large tortilla, use a smaller piece of one as a patch in the center before folding. This extra layer is a barrier, keeping all the delicious ingredients inside.
  • Cook Seam-Side Down: Begin cooking with the seam side down to help seal the folds and prevent the Crunchwrap from opening up in the air fryer. The initial heat helps “glue” the folds together, reducing the chance of unraveling.
  • Don’t Overstuff: While loading up on fillings is tempting, too much can make the Crunchwrap difficult to close and cook evenly. Keeping the filling in manageable amounts ensures a good seal and even cooking.
  • Use Non-Stick Spray: Lightly spray the air fryer basket and the outside of the Crunchwrap with non-stick cooking spray to enhance browning and prevent sticking. A light coating ensures a crispy exterior without the Crunchwrap sticking to the basket.
  • Flip Halfway Through: Gently flip the Crunchwrap halfway through cooking to ensure both sides get crispy and golden brown. Flipping ensures an evenly cooked, crispy texture throughout the entire Crunchwrap.
  • Let it Rest: Allow the Crunchwrap to rest for a couple of minutes after cooking for the fillings to settle, making it easier to cut and eat. Resting solidifies the structure, reducing the chance of fillings spilling out when you take that first bite.
  • Customize Your Fillings: Don’t be afraid to experiment with different fillings, from various meats and cheeses to vegetarian and vegan options. Personalizing your Crunchwrap allows you to cater to individual tastes and dietary needs, making it a versatile meal option for any occasion. Strategic layering helps maintain Crunchwrap’s structure and ensures an even distribution of flavors.

Following these pro tips will elevate your Air Fryer Crunchwrap experience, turning a simple meal into a gourmet treat that’s both delicious and easy to make.

Faq’s

Can I use frozen ingredients in my Air Fryer Crunchwrap? Yes, you can use frozen ingredients, such as frozen pre-cooked meat or vegetables. However, ensure they are thawed and properly heated or cooked to the right temperature before adding them to your Crunchwrap to ensure even cooking.

How do I prevent the Crunchwrap from opening up during cooking? To prevent the Crunchwrap from opening up, make sure to fold it tightly and start cooking with the seam-side down. Additionally, you can lightly press it under something flat, like a spatula or another pan, right before cooking to help seal the edges.

Is it possible to make a vegetarian or vegan Air Fryer Crunchwrap? Absolutely! For a vegetarian version, replace the meat with beans, lentils, or a meat substitute. For a vegan Crunchwrap, also swap out dairy ingredients for vegan cheese and sour cream, and use plant-based meat substitutes.

What temperature and how long should I cook my Crunchwrap in the air fryer? A general guideline is to cook your Crunchwrap at 375°F (190°C) for about 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through. Adjustments may be needed based on your air fryer model and how crispy you prefer your Crunchwrap.

Can I make multiple Crunchwraps in the air fryer at once? Yes, you can cook multiple Crunchwraps at the same time as long as they fit in a single layer without touching each other. This ensures they cook evenly and get crispy all around.

How do I keep the contents from spilling out while eating? Ensuring a tight fold and letting the Crunchwrap rest for a couple of minutes after cooking will help the contents settle and reduce spillage. Cutting it in half can also make it easier to manage.

Can I prepare Air Fryer Crunchwraps in advance? While you can prepare the fillings in advance, it’s best to assemble and air fry the Crunchwrap right before eating to enjoy its characteristic crispiness. However, assembled but uncooked Crunchwraps can be stored in the refrigerator for a few hours before cooking.

What’s the best way to reheat leftovers? To reheat, place the Crunchwrap back in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 3-5 minutes, or until it’s heated through and crispy again. Avoid microwaving, as it can make the tortilla soggy.

Can I add sauce inside my Crunchwrap? Yes, adding your favorite sauce inside can enhance the flavor, but be cautious not to add too much liquid, as it can make the tortilla soggy. Consider thicker sauces, and add them sparingly.

How do I know when the Crunchwrap is done cooking? The Crunchwrap is done when the exterior is golden brown and crispy to the touch. The fillings should be hot all the way through, which you can check by inserting a skewer or small knife into the center to feel for warmth.
