How To Make Blueberry Biscuits In The Air Fryer

Making blueberry biscuits in the air fryer is a quick and delightful way to enjoy a treat that’s crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Here’s a simple recipe to follow:

Air Fryer Blueberry Biscuits

Mix the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and ground cinnamon in a large bowl. Use your mixer to blend in the shortening. Slowly add the buttermilk and mix well. Once the dough starts forming a ball, stop mixing.

Fold in the blueberries. I used my hands to get everything well blended. Flour the work surface and rolling pin and roll out the dough.

Cut out the biscuits using a 2 3/4-inch biscuit cutter. Then, place the formed biscuits in a greased air fryer for 6-9 minutes at 350 degrees F air fryer setting.

Let cool slightly before drizzling the icing over the biscuits.

Recipe Variations

Here are some variations on the basic air fryer blueberry biscuit recipe to keep things interesting and cater to different tastes:

  • Lemon-Blueberry Biscuits: To enhance the blueberry flavor, add the zest of one lemon to the dough. Mix powdered sugar with lemon juice for a lemon glaze and drizzle over the biscuits once they’re slightly cooled.
  • Blueberry-Chocolate Chip Biscuits: For a sweet twist, add 1/2 cup of chocolate chips to the dough along with the blueberries. You can use dark, milk, or white chocolate chips according to preference.
  • Cinnamon-Spice Blueberry Biscuits: For a warm, spiced flavor, add 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg to the flour mixture. Sprinkle the tops of the biscuits with a mix of cinnamon and sugar before air frying.
  • Blueberry Almond Biscuits: Add 1/2 cup of sliced almonds to the dough for a nutty flavor and extra crunch. Mix in 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract to enhance the almond flavor.
  • Gluten-Free Blueberry Biscuits: Substitute the all-purpose flour with your preferred gluten-free flour blend. Ensure that the blend is a 1:1 replacement and includes xanthan gum if the original mix doesn’t have it. You may need to adjust the milk quantity slightly as some gluten-free flours absorb liquid differently.
  • Vegan Blueberry Biscuits: Use plant-based milk (such as almond or oat milk) in place of regular milk. Substitute the butter with a vegan alternative, and ensure it’s cold for best results.
  • Savory Blueberry Cheese Biscuits: Reduce the sugar to 1 tablespoon or omit it entirely for a savory version. Add 1/2 cup of grated sharp cheddar cheese and 2 tablespoons of finely chopped fresh basil or rosemary to the dough. This variation pairs wonderfully with a dinner meal.
  • Blueberry Cornmeal Biscuits: Replace 1/2 cup of the all-purpose flour with fine cornmeal for a different texture and slightly sweet, cornbread-like flavor. This variation adds a lovely crunch and golden color to the biscuits.
  • Yogurt Blueberry Biscuits: Substitute the milk with equal parts of Greek yogurt to make the biscuits extra moist and tangy. This also adds a slight protein boost to your biscuits.
  • Whole Wheat Blueberry Biscuits: For a nuttier flavor and increased fiber, use half all-purpose flour and half whole wheat flour. Whole wheat flour can make the dough denser, so you might want to add more milk to adjust the consistency.

Experiment with these variations or mix and match elements to create your perfect blueberry biscuit recipe. The air fryer makes it easy to try different combinations without a lot of fuss, so have fun with it!

Pro Tips

Here are the pro tips for making air fryer blueberry biscuits, expanded with a bit of explanation for each point:
  • Cold Ingredients: Use cold butter cut into small cubes or grated. Cold butter ensures the biscuits become flaky, creating steam pockets when it melts in the cooking process. Similarly, cold milk (or buttermilk) interacts more effectively with the leavening agent, contributing to a better rise.
  • Avoid Overmixing: Mix the dough just until the ingredients are combined. Overmixing leads to gluten development, making your biscuits tough instead of light and flaky.
  • Gentle Handling: Handle the dough as little as possible when shaping your biscuits. Overworking the dough warms the butter and develops gluten, which can make the biscuits dense.
  • Thickness Matters: Pat the dough out to about 1-inch thickness for optimal rise and texture. This thickness is a sweet spot for ensuring the middle cooks just as perfectly as the outside.
  • Use Parchment Paper: If your air fryer basket is wire mesh, use a piece of parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure good airflow. This helps in easy removal and even browning of the biscuits.
  • Don’t Overcrowd: Space the biscuits in the air fryer for proper air circulation. Cooking in batches if necessary prevents them from steaming and ensures they crisp up nicely.
  • Adjust Cooking Times: All air fryers are slightly different, so adjust the cooking time as needed. Keep an eye on them during the first attempt to find the perfect cooking time for your device.
  • Brush with Butter: For a golden, tasty top, brush the tops of the biscuits with melted butter before and after baking. This adds a rich flavor and a beautiful golden color.
  • Resting the Dough: If you have time, let the cut biscuits rest for about 15 minutes before cooking. Resting allows the dough to relax, leading to a higher rise and more tender texture.
  • Storing and Reheating: Store leftovers in an airtight container to maintain freshness. Reheat them in the air fryer to restore the crisp exterior without drying them out, making them as good as freshly baked.

These expanded tips should help you achieve the best results with your air fryer blueberry biscuits, making the process more enjoyable and the biscuits even more delicious!

Faq’s

Can I use frozen blueberries instead of fresh? Yes, you can use frozen blueberries without thawing them. Just be aware that frozen blueberries might bleed into the dough more, turning it slightly blue/purple. This won’t affect the taste, though.

Can I double the recipe? Yes, you can easily double the recipe to make more biscuits. However, you may still need to cook them in batches to avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket and ensure they cook evenly and properly.

How do I know when the biscuits are done? The biscuits are done when they are golden brown on top and firm to the touch. A toothpick inserted into the center of a biscuit should come out clean or with a few crumbs attached.
