What Are Chicken Thighs?

With so many cuts of chicken out there, it can be hard to know what they all are. What is a chicken thigh? The best way to think about this cut is that the thigh sits on top of the leg, and you usually find them attached as one piece.

Chicken thighs have a higher fat content than other parts of the bird, which means they’re juicer and more flavorful when cooked properly. And because their skin doesn’t come in contact with much heat during cooking, they don’t dry out or become tough from overcooking. If you’re trying to cook healthy meals for your family but still want flavor—chicken thighs are just what you need!

Pro Tips:

  • This recipe will work in any Air Fryer Basket or Oven Model. I have also prepared and cooked this recipe in the Ninja Foodi, Instant Pot Vortex, Instant Pot Crisp Lid, and the Mealthy Lid. The recipe will work the same. The cooking time may vary slightly.
  • I would recommend lining your basket with a silicone reusable air fryer liner. If you do not have any, you can omit or spray your basket with cooking spray. I would not recommend using parchment, and do not preheat your air fryer with a piece of parchment paper, as it will burn.
  • Preheating the air fryer will give you a great sear on the chicken thighs and the vegetables. Follow your manufacturer’s instructions on preheating. I generally set the preheat to the same temperature as in the recipe, heat for 5 to 8 minutes, and then add my food.
  • Do not crowd the basket. Otherwise, the chicken thighs will not cook up correctly.
  • Shake or use a pair of tongs to move your food around while it cooks up for a perfect dish every single time.

CAN I USE BONELESS SKINLESS CHICKEN BREAST INSTEAD OF THIGHS?

We get this question a lot, and it’s such an important one because there are so many reasons to use thighs instead of breasts.

Thighs tend to have more flavor than boneless, skinless chicken breast, they’re cheaper, and they’re better for you because thigh meat has less fat. So if you can’t find thighs at your store or don’t want to spend the extra money on them, try using boneless skinless chicken breasts instead! You’ll still be able to make this recipe using them!

CAN I USE DIFFERENT VEGETABLES?

Today, I used a mix of frozen broccoli and red pepper, but you really can use any vegetable in season. Some of my favorites are zucchini, asparagus, cauliflower, green beans, and summer squash!

All of these vegetables roast up beautifully in the air fryer, and you get that slow-roasted flavor in minutes!

CAN I ROAST THEM IN THE OVEN INSTEAD?

Any dish that you prepare in the Air Fryer can be prepared in the oven, and vice versa. Prepare the dish as directed in the recipe, and then place it on a baking sheet. Place the baking sheet into a preheated 425 degrees F oven, and cook for about 15 to 20 minutes. Flip about halfway through the cooking process.

HOW TO TELL WHEN CHICKEN IS COOKED, WHEN USING THE AIR FRYER

Do you know how to tell when chicken is cooked in the air fryer? It can be hard to tell if it’s done. When cooking meats and proteins in the air fryer, the best advice I can give you is to use a meat thermometer. When the internal temperature of the thickest part of the chicken thighs reaches 165 degrees F, remove the chicken, and let rest for about 5 minutes.

HOW TO STORE LEFTOVER CHICKEN THIGHS

What to do with leftover chicken thighs? I know you’re wondering. When it comes to storing your leftovers, the first thing you need to do is make sure they are cooled to room temperature.

Then you can put them in a plastic container or zippered bag and place them in the fridge for up to 4 to 5 days.

HOW TO REHEAT CHICKEN THIGHS IN THE AIR FRYER?

Add all of your leftovers to the Air Fryer Basket, and set the temperature to 350 degrees F, air fryer setting, reheat until warmed them through.

I usually brush the leftover chicken thighs with either olive oil or melted butter to help the chicken thighs stay moist during reheating.

HOW TO COOK FROZEN CHICKEN THIGHS IN THE AIR FRYER?

Want to AIr Fryer frozen chicken thighs? No problem, set the temperature to 360 degrees F, air fryer sitting, and cook for 25 to 30 minutes until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F.
