This is one of my favorite recipes, and if you have ever purchased Fried Dough at the Italian Festival or purchased some at a local pizza shop, this recipe will have you in love at first bite!

Made with pizza dough, this recipe is fast and flavorful. Today, I served them with simple powdered sugar and milk coating, but you can dust them with powdered sugar for a great and easy twist.

What Are Zeppole?

Zeppole are nothing more than fried doughnut balls. They are prepared all over Italy, and they serve as a special treat.

While Zeppole are usually deep-fried, you can make the same recipe using the Air Fryer. They will taste almost the same, but you will save many calories from the fat and oil that is not needed.

You can really elevate them even more by filling them with curd, pudding, or even jelly.

How To Make Air Fryer Zeppole Fried Dough Balls (From Pizza Dough)

Dough Balls for Zeppole

Start by shaping your zeppoles into balls about the size of red potato as you make them lay them onto a greased air fryer basket or pan.

Set your cooking time for 3 minutes at 340 degrees F; after 3 minutes, shake them around a bit so they get evenly cooked. After the additional 3 minutes, check and see if they are cooked all the way through.

In a small bowl, add your powdered sugar and milk, and mix well. Dip the cooked zeppoles into the sugar glaze. Let cool slightly before serving.

Some Pro Tips:

  • This recipe will work in any Air Fryer Basket and Oven Models. I have made this several times in the Ninja Foodi, Instant Pot Crisp Lid, and Mealthy Lid.
  • The cooking time will vary based on your Zeppole balls and what air fryer you are using.
  • If you do not want to coat them, you can serve them as i.
  • For best results, try to make them about the same size, so they all cook up simultaneously.

Can Zeppole Be Made Ahead Of Time?

I would highly recommend that you make these as you want to serve them. They are so much better served hot fresh.

But if you have any leftovers, place them into an airtight container and keep them at room temperature, where they will keep for about 1 to 2 days.

What Sauces To Serve With Air Fryer Zeppole

Today, I served a simple powdered sugar icing on top. But there are so many ways you can serve these up. Some of my favorites are:

  • Chocolate Drizzle
  • Caramel Drizzle
  • Powdered Sugar Coating
