What Are Tuna Patties?

Tuna patties, also known as tuna cakes or croquettes, are small, flattened cakes made from canned tuna and a mixture of ingredients like bread crumbs, eggs, and various seasonings. They are typically combined, shaped into small patties, and then pan-fried until crispy and golden.

Tuna patties are often served with dips, salads, or sandwiches and provide a delicious way to enjoy tuna in a form other than the traditional tuna salad. They’re a great source of protein and can be customized with different herbs, spices, and additional ingredients to suit personal preferences.

Step Two: Preheat the Air Fryer

Before cooking, preheat your air fryer to 375 degrees F (190°C) for about 2-3 minutes.

Step Three: Grease or Use Parchment Paper

Lightly spray the air fryer basket with non-stick cooking spray, brush with olive oil,  or line it with parchment paper (ensure it’s suitable for air fryers). This will prevent the tuna patties from sticking.

Step Four: Place the Patties

Place uncooked tuna patties into the air fryer basket in a single layer, ensuring they are spaced apart and not overcrowded. You might need to cook in batches, depending on the size of your air fryer.

Pro Tips For The Best Air Fryer Tuna Patties Recipe

To ensure that you get the most out of your Air Fryer Tuna Patties experience, here are some pro tips:

Quality of Tuna: Opt for high-quality canned tuna, preferably in water. Drain the tuna well to prevent the patties from becoming too soggy.

Consistent Size: Make sure to form the patties in a uniform size and thickness. This ensures even cooking.

Chill Before Cooking: For best results, once the patties are formed, refrigerate them for about 20-30 minutes. This helps them hold their shape better during the cooking process.

Avoid Overcrowding: Don’t cram too many patties into the air fryer simultaneously. They should be placed in a single layer with space in between for proper airflow, ensuring a crispy finish.

Flip Carefully: Use a thin spatula to flip the patties midway through cooking. This ensures an even golden-brown crust on both sides.

Seasoning Variation: Feel free to experiment with seasonings! Add a dash of cayenne for a spicy kick, parmesan cheese, or some lemon zest for a fresh twist.

Serving Suggestion: Tuna patties pair excellently with tartar sauce, fresh parsley, fresh cilantro, lemon wedges, or a light salad on the side.

Check for Doneness: While the outside might look done, ensure the inside is cooked through. A quick-read thermometer should read at least 145°F (63°C) in the center of the patty.

Reheating: If you have leftovers, the air fryer is excellent for reheating them. Just pop them back in at 350°F (175°C) for a few minutes until they’re heated. This will retain the crispiness.

Binder Options: If you want to make the recipe gluten-free, you can replace breadcrumbs with almond flour or ground flaxseeds.

Using these tips, you’ll surely get a perfect batch of Air Fryer Tuna Patties every time!
