This recipe is one of my favorites because I get to use one of my favorite ingredients: broccoli rabe. You’ll need an Instant Pot or pressure cooker, but don’t worry-they’re not that expensive! What Is Broccoli Rabe?

Broccoli rabe is a leafy vegetable that looks similar to broccoli, but the taste is much more bitter. It’s typically used in Italian dishes and often cooked with red pepper flakes. This post includes an easy recipe for making Broccoli Rabe pasta, which can be served as a side dish or main course!

Ingredients Needed For Instant Pot Penne with Sausage and Broccoli Rabe

  • Penne Pasta
  • Italian Sausage
  • Minced Garlic
  • Red Pepper Flakes
  • Broccoli Rabe
  • Grated Parmesan Cheese
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Black Pepper

How To Make Instant Pot Penne with Sausage and Broccoli Rabe

Instant Pot Penne with Sausage and Broccoli Rabe

Start by removing the casings from the sausage, and then add them to the Instant Pot, saute’ until they are cooked and crumbly.

Then rinse out the Instant Pot bowl, add the pasta and water.
**Note: The pasta should be covered with water. Watch the fill line, and make sure it’s slightly over.

Set the manual high pressure for 4 minutes, making sure that the vent is sealed. When the time is up,  do a quick release.

Drain the pasta. Return to the Instant Pot. Add about 1/2 cup of water, add the broccoli rabe and press the saute’ button. I added the lid so that the steam from the water and pasta would cook the broccoli rabe. It took about 4 minutes, but the broccoli was softened.

  • 1 pound penne pasta

  • 3 teaspoons garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 pound broccoli rabe, (cut into small pieces (remove the stems)
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 4 cups water
  • salt and pepper to taste
