Instant Pot Shepherd’s Pie–One of the most popular casseroles in America, has great ground beef, vegetables, and topped with mashed potatoes all prepared in the Instant Pot.

If you have never had Shepherd’s Pie, it’s a great and easy recipe, and it’s truly a family favorite. It is a great comfort meal with a traditional English recipe filled with ground beef and mashed potatoes. Prepared in less than 20 minutes with the help of the Instant Pot.

What Is Shepherd’s Pie?

A traditional Shepherd’s Pie is made with ground beef, vegetables, carrots, corn, and peas and topped with a creamy mashed potato layer.

This dish came all the way from England, where it’s usually prepared with ground lamb. Which is where the name came from, since it’s typically made with lamb in England, it’s called Shepherd’s Pie. Another name that is popular with this dish is Cottage Pie.

How To Make Instant Pot Shepherd’s Pie?

  • Russet Potatoes
  • Ground Beef
  • Onion Soup Mix
  • Butter
  • Frozen Mixed Vegetables
  • Water
  • Sour Cream
  • Milk
  • Brown Gray
  • Start by preparing the ground beef, press the saute button, and add the ground beef and onion soup mix. Saute for a few minutes, until fully cooked.
  • Mix in the water and frozen vegetables, add the steamer basket, and place the potatoes on top.
  • Place your lid on the Instant Pot, and set the manual high pressure for 15 minutes.
  • When the time is up, do a quick release.
  • Remove the potatoes, add them to a small bowl, using a fork or potato mash, mash the potatoes and mix in the butter and milk.
  • In your Instant Pot, add the gravy and sour cream, press the saute button, and saute until everything is cooked. Transfer the ground meat mixture to a casserole dish, pour the mashed potatoes on top.

HOW TO STORE LEFTOVER SHEPHERD’S PIE

If you have any leftovers, let the shepherd’s pie cool to room temperature. Then place the leftovers into an airtight container.

Set the container into the refrigerator. It will last between 2 to 3 days. To reheat, either place in the microwave or use a small pan on the stove.

Ingredients

  • 3 Russet Potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 1/2 pounds lean Ground Beef
  • 1 packet Onion Soup Mix
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted Butter
  • 16 ounces Frozen Mixed Vegetables
  • 2 cups Water
  • 1 cup Sour Cream
  • 1/4  cup Milk
  • 1 package Brown Gray

Instructions

  1. Start by preparing the ground beef, press the saute button, and add the ground beef and onion soup mix. Saute for a few minutes, until fully cooked.
  2. Mix in the water and frozen vegetables, add the steamer basket, and place the potatoes on top.
  3. Place your lid on the Instant Pot, and set the manual high pressure for 15 minutes.
  4. When the time is up, do a quick release.
  5. Remove the potatoes, add them to a small bowl, using a fork or potato mash, mash the potatoes and mix in the butter and milk.
  6. In your Instant Pot, add the gravy and sour cream, press the saute button, and saute until everything is cooked. Transfer the ground meat mixture to a casserole dish, pour the mashed potatoes on top.

Notes

After the Shepherd’s Pie has assembled, if you want, place the casserole into the broiler for a couple of minutes.
